1. Private soldier: the private soldier rank is the first
rank a non commisioned officer attained immediately passing out from Depot
Nigerian Army in Zaria. it doesn't have a symbol and the place for the rank is
blank.
2. Lance Corporal: this is the second stage of the non commissioned officer rank. It comes with a V shape. It takes a non commissioned officer 5 years or more to be promoted to this rank. Only in some cases you see someone coming out from the training with that rank. Such exemptions are for the Military police.
3. Corporal: this is the last rank of the junior non commissioned officer. The military is divided into junior and senior but in the officer cadre and the non commissioned officer cadre. This particular rank comes with 2 v shape.
4. Sergeant: this is the first stage of the senior non commissioned officer. The symbol of this rank is have 3 V shapes on your chest. Many of those with this rank are given the Sergeant Okorocha or regimental police RP. In many units or regiments. From this stage you start going to Sgt Mess.
5. Staff Sergeant: this is the next promoted rank after the Sergeant, it comes with an eagle on top the 3 V shapes. Just a senior to Sergeant without any special duty.
6. Warrant officer (W.O): from here you are now holding the position of an RSM. Most times acting if the unit has no master warrant officer. The warrant officer rank comes with a wrist watch. Which is worn on your right hand. You now move about with stick to show you are a senior non commissioned officer.
7. Master warrant officer (MWO): this is a rank that signifies that a soldier is learned in a particular core. The military is divided basically into several cores or let's use faculty in civil language. So a master warrant officer is just like a warrant officer, the rank comes with a watch and when on liberty dress or ceremonial dress it comes with a coat of Arms. At this moment you are now a RSM (regimental Sergeant major). You are running the affairs of all non commissioned officers in a particular unit.
8. Army warrant officer (A.W.O): this is the last and final rank of the non commissioned officer. The rank is a symbol of power. It encompasses all the warrant officers into a single entity. Every core possess only one warrant officer. If the military has 8 cores we will have 8 A.W.O. excluding the army headquarters and defence head quarters. This rank is also equivalent to the rank of a captain. All entitlement of captain as an officer is entitled to you. It comes with a coat of arms and also a watch with a coat of arms.
